The 9th on 5/6/23

It’s been a while since I wrote a blog post. Things have been busy in the store, especially during the pandemic. There’s been a nationwide resurgence of interest in piano playing apparently. I’m happy to be in the business serving the Twin Ports. This fall will be my ninth anniversary!

This blog is about my transition from singing to being a piano person. I guess I spend more time nowadays being a piano person, but I am still singing! This Saturday, the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra is performing Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, and I’m joining the choir to help the tenor section out. The last time I sang this was in college decades ago, at least in the chorus. I sang the tenor solos in the Ninth Symphony dozens of times and in dozens of places, including in Holland and Germany. It was regularly performed at my theater in Germany at New Year’s Eve. What a great piece of music! It’s an honor to be able to perform it once again.

And coming soon is the Lyric Opera of the North's summer production, Cavalleria Rusticana. Once again, I will be part of the chorus, and what a chorus it will be!

As life goes on, selling pianos and singing in professional productions is not the only thing that gives me great pride. We’re up to three grandchildren now, which is a miracle and a blessing.

Duluth won the Golden Shovel Award for the most snow in a season in Duluth. I think it was around 12 feet. We are so ready for- what we call around here- Construction Season, but it’s really just the season that doesn’t have snow in it. And here it is! What a great time to do something about your lack of a piano!

Piano Day @ UMD!

Under the direction of Dr. Asami Hagiwara, Assistant Professor of Piano at UMD, the Division 2 participants are rehearsing their ensemble pieces for the concert later in the afternoon. Getting 8 pianists to play together with a conductor is harder than you might think! Most of these students are not used to following a conductor!

On the stage are two 9' concert grands, and a 6'7" Yamaha S5X, along with scads of upright pianos, mostly Yamahas! These pianos would later be filled with pianists of all ages, college students, teachers, and beginners.

The concert was amazing, with everyone giving their best. Special treats were the Mendelssohn Piano Concerto with Gabrielle Koepke, and a grand finale with Hagiwara and special Guest Artist, Dr. Jacob Ertl, playing Ravel's "La Valse." And extra special was the winner of the Piano Day Raffle, Emily Beaster, who walked away with a brand new Yamaha P-45 piano, courtesy of Yamaha and Duluth Fine Pianos!

DFP also hosted a Discover Yamaha Room, with 7 top-of-the-line instruments to try, including a TransAcoustic U1TA, an NU1X Hybrid, 3 different Clavinovas, and the favorite of the day, a baby grand Disklavier! Many players were amazed to record themselves and then see themselves playing in a video, with keys and pedals moving.

A resounding success, the UMD Annual Piano Day promises to be a great event every year. Congratulations, Dr. Hagiwara!

On February 22nd from 6-8 pm, coinciding with the Downtown Duluth Art Walk (DDAW), Ryan Frane was joined by Matt Mobley on bass, and special guest star, Dave Schmalenberger on drums for a great evening of live, professional, acoustic jazz! Standing ovation! There's a small taste below. The next JAZZ@DFP event is scheduled for March 29th, and the cast of characters is TBA. The cost of admission is still free, there are light refreshments, good conversation, fine art, and free parking available. What more could you want! Put it on your calendar! These guys covered the gamut of musical styles, emotions, colors and flavors. A real smorgasbord! I can't wait to see who comes in March!

JAZZ@DFP! The first concert/open house took place on November 2nd from 6-8, when Ryan Frane, piano, Matt Mobley, bass, and Randy Lee, reeds, played for a rapt audience who also enjoyed just having a drink and a nibble while enjoying the great vibe as we celebrated the Grand Re-Opening of DFP at the new location! The newly opened street in front of the store made everything seem just perfect!
We hope to make JAZZ@DFP! a thing. Look for the next monthly installment to coincide with the Downtown Duluth Art Walk, which occurs the last Friday of every month! (November 30th?). Then you can not only catch some of the greatest live jazz anywhere, but also check out the art of Esther Piszczek, and possibly even meet the artist!

Take the opportunity to try it out this Friday, when DFP celebrates its Grand Re-Opening with a jazz concert, featuring Ryan Frane on the Yamaha S5X Premium Piano, Randy Lee on reeds, and Matt Mobley on bass. Admission is free, and there will be some refreshments! Stop by! If you have not seen the new showroom, this is a great opportunity, and if you have, it will be a great evening of music with the most expensive piano in town in action! I look forward to seeing you there!
